NEW HAVEN — Several upside-down American flags are flying over the Occupy New Haven encampment on the Green, a move activists say symbolizes “a nation in distress.”
It’s also a move that’s likely to stir up some controversy.
“We flipped them as a symbol,” occupier “Moose” Lee said Wednesday. “It’s not meant to be a symbol of disrespect. It’s meant to be a symbol of distress.”
As in, the country is in distress, plagued by income disparity and economic injustice at the hands of overly powerful corporations and big banks, occupiers say.
However, some people offended by the treatment of the flag at the New Haven occupation have complained to protestors and the press. While some may consider hanging the flag upside down a form of “flag desecration,” activists on the Green say it simply reflects the international practice of signaling distress.
“It means there is a state of emergency. There is a state of emergency here in America,” said activist Tommy “Doomsday.”
Okay, two things:
1. You really couldn’t find anyone to talk to besides “Moose” Lee and Tommy “Doomsday”?
2. You’re serving HTML from a .txt extension?!?
